Men On Boats - 2019 Cast Photographs at Baltimore Center Stage

Tintype portraits made with the cast of Men In Boats that opened at the Baltimore Center Stage in December, 2019. This rollicking comedy is history as you’ve never seen it before — without a single man in sight. Join a team of explorers as they tell the true(ish) story of the “discovery” of the Grand Canyon and upend everything...including their boats

Occupational Portraits Waterford, VA, 2019

A collaborative set of photographs made with Nate Larson, as part of his Centroid Towns project

Waterford-adjacent community of artisans and craftspeople were invited to have their contemporary portrait made using this unique historic process. Sitters dictated the choice of clothing and selected the objects and tools of their trade. We made two plates with each person - one for the exhibition and one for them to keep. The most interesting part for us is when an image begins to read as historic and then shifts with the reveal of an anachronism or contemporary detail. This speaks to the dual identities of Waterford today, which coexists as both modern and historic, occupying both spaces concurrently..

Akea Brionne Brown - An Archive of Our Own, 2019

Akea Brionne Brown’s “An Archive of Our Own (2019)” explores black maternal relationships through the creation of an archive. Both as a critique and exploration of the photographic medium, the historic tin type process is used to display the lack of depth within the medium to correctly expose for darker skin tones. Simultaneously, the portraits begin to frame the relationships between black mothers and daughters, through the exploration of the body and space.

Akea collaborated with Jay in the making of the images for her exhibition.
